Supervisors choose the stages

A checklist of six boxes where a pen has ticked three of them, with three green dots above the list.

Some competencies ask for a set number of stages from a longer list, such as case studies picked by the Supervisor. Supervisors can now choose which stages each person completes, so the assessment fits the person and the work they do.

Competency authors set the minimum number of stages to be chosen, so every person still meets the standard, and Compassly shows how many more are needed.

Question pools for knowledge tests

A bowl full of folded paper slips with three slips lifted out above it.

Competency authors can now write a pool of multiple choice questions, organised into sections, and decide how many questions are drawn from each section. Compassly then picks that number at random from the pool for each person, such as 10 from 30.

This keeps tests varied from one person to the next and from one attempt to the next. If someone doesn't reach the pass mark and tries again, the new attempt draws a fresh set, which reduces the chance of seeing the same questions twice.

Evidence for stages

A document with a certificate and rosette resting on top of a competency card that has a green tick.

Stages can now be completed with evidence, which the Supervisor reviews and accepts or rejects, in the same way as retrospective competencies. This opens up several uses. If someone has some assessments for a competency completed on paper, but not the whole competency, those assessments can be uploaded to complete part of it.

Evidence stages also let a competency ask for specific documents to be uploaded and reviewed, such as course certificates or written test papers. Competency authors can add guidance on the evidence they expect.

Find your way around stages

A question card with a progress bar at the front of a small stack, beside a contents list with one item highlighted.

Tapping the progress bar in a stage now opens a contents list of its questions, grouped into sections, showing what has been answered and any comments. It gives an overview of progress at a glance.

You can jump straight to any question and answer them out of sequence, which helps in live assessments where the work doesn't happen in the order it is written.

Bring an expiry date forward

A desk calendar where a coral ring has moved from a later date back to an earlier green date, with an arrow tracing the move and a fresh line written on a small record card beside it.

The standard expiry date is not always right. A retrospective competency may have been achieved a year before it was recorded, or local guidance may call for an earlier review.

A Supervisor can now bring the expiry date forward, when signing a competency off or afterwards. It can only be made earlier than the period set by the competency author, never later, so the governance set for renewal is always followed.

Every change to an expiry date is recorded with who made it and when, giving a full audit trail.

Other improvements

Competency authors can attach references directly to a stage, shown on its opening screen.

When a saved stage is picked up again, each answer shows who gave it and when. This gives a more detailed audit trail when an assessment or checklist is completed over several sittings, or by more than one person.

The Competencies list now shows a progress bar for each competency, and stage groups on a competency record are more clearly separated.
