Clinical competencies, assessed in practice and kept in date

Competencies are the foundation of safe care, and keeping them current across a whole workforce is a major undertaking. Compassly gives each member of staff the right competencies for their role, assessed where they work and renewed when they fall due, so you can see who is competent, in what, and when they are next due to renew.

Assessment that fits practice

Much of clinical practice cannot be assessed at a computer. In Compassly, observed practice, written answers, multiple choice questions (MCQs) and questions asked in person are all assessed in the app, on whatever device is to hand during a shift. Optional AI marking drafts suggested feedback on written answers for the marker, who always makes the decision.

Every completed competency automatically generates a certificate with a QR code that anyone can scan, even without a Compassly account. It always shows where that competency stands today, including renewal and expiry.

Your standards, your library

Most organisations assess against their own competencies, often alongside national ones. Your competency authors build your library from your own content, reuse standard stages as templates and prepare every change in a draft. When guidance changes, you decide who needs to redo what, and every version stays on record.

National passports run on Compassly too, such as the UKONS SACT Competency Passport. When someone joins from an organisation that uses the same or a linked competency, the progress they have already made counts from day one.

Right competencies, every role

Knowing which competencies each person needs gets harder as staff join, move and change roles. In Compassly, a job description gives each person the competencies their role needs, based on where they work, their service and their role. Core competencies always come with the role, and Managers add the optional ones that fit the individual's role and progress.

New starters join your organisation with one scan of a QR code, and their competencies can be assigned in the same step. People join the right teams automatically through their job description, so their Supervisors can support them straight away.

Skills that stay in date

A competency is for life, not just for first sign-off. Each competency can carry its own completion due date, expiry period and renewal route, all set by its competency author, from a short declaration to a full reassessment. Authors can also offer a choice of approved routes, so the Supervisor can pick the most appropriate one for the person. Staff and their Supervisors are reminded when competencies are due soon, become late or near expiry, in the app, by push or by email.

Where a skill is no longer part of someone's regular practice, the competency can be deactivated. Where there are concerns about practice, the competency can be invalidated while they are looked at, and the competency records who invalidated it, when and why.

Assurance at every level

Leaders need to know that competencies are signed off by the right people, and that the picture they see is current. Your organisation decides who can assess, mark and sign off each competency, and Compassly applies those rules every time and records who did what, and when. You can also ask Supervisors to hold a valid competency themselves before they assess anyone else.

Supervisors see their teams at a glance on the Dashboard in the app, and web reporting dashboards give a wider view across your organisation that can be saved as a PDF for board papers and inspections. Because every record is live, the picture is current whenever you look.
